Probably the most effective way to control their population is to prevent breeding. Find out here how to effectively implement mosquito management in your premises.
Understanding Mosquitoes
-
- Aedes mosquitoes
-
- Aedes aegypti – known for spreading dengue fever and Zika virus. They are usually found indoors and breed in clean, stagnant water
- Aedes albopictus – “Asian tiger mosquito”; they prefer outdoor environments and can transmit dengue and chikungunya.
-
- Culex mosquitoes
-
- Culex quinquefasciatus – unlike aedes aegypti, they breed in polluted water. The diseases they transmit are Japanese encephalitis and filariasis.
-
- Anopheles mosquitoes
- Aedes mosquitoes
-
-
-
- Anopheles sundaicus and Anopheles maculatus – they breed in brackish water and are known for transmitting malaria.

Their Lifecycle
Did you know that when you understand the lifecycle of mosquitoes, you can reduce their presence in your home? Here are the four stages of a mosquito’s lifecycle, and some notable information that could help you control them whenever you see their presence at your home.
| Stage | Description | Duration | Habitat | Worth knowing |
| Egg | Tiny, oval-shaped eggs laid in clusters | 2-3 days | On or near stagnant water | Female mosquitoes lay 100-500 eggs at a time. |
| Larva | Aquatic, worm-like stage (wigglers) | 7-14 days | In water | Breathes through siphon tubes; molts several times |
| Pupa | Non-feeding stage (tumblers) | 1-4 days | In water | Metamorphosis occurs inside the pupal case. |
| Adult | Flying, reproductive stage | 2-4 weeks (females) | Air; near water for breeding | Only females bite and suck blood (for egg production). |
Keeping Mosquitoes Away (Prevention)
If mosquitoes are yet to swarm around or near your property, it’s best to keep it that way. But how exactly can you prevent them from breeding?
Eliminate Breeding Sites
One of the best ways to manage mosquitoes is to limit them from breeding in your yard or garden. Even in the tiniest amounts of water, they can breed. So remove breeding sources as much as possible.
- Empty and clean containers regularly as they can collect water. For example, flower pots, vases, buckets, and pet water bowls.
- Make sure that you properly cover water storage containers.
- Check and clear any blocked drains or gutters.
- Get rid of old tires, cans, and other items that can collect water.
- Change the water in flower vases and plant saucers at least once a week.
- Fix leaking taps and pipes.
- Apply insecticides to areas where mosquitoes are likely to breed. But make sure you follow the instructions carefully.
Physical Barriers
You can maintain a fly screen on your windows, doors, and openings and use an even coarser mesh if you want to keep out smaller insects.
Natural Repellents
Since mosquitoes are attracted to strong smells, dark clothing, and warm body temperatures. So it’s also a good idea to repel them through the use of a mosquito repellent. Even if it doesn’t kill them, we can keep them away to reduce our chances of contracting vector diseases they carry.
Some natural repellents that you can try are the following.
- The insect-repellent version of lemon eucalyptus oil
- Geraniol found in rose oil, lemongrass, and citronella
- Cinnamon oil
- Catnip oil
Take note that their safety and efficacy are not yet fully verified. More testing is needed.
Reducing Mosquito Populations (Control)
Of course, you can reduce their populations through various approaches: chemical, biological, and mechanical control.
Chemical Methods
There are two, and they target mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes respectively: Larvicides and Adulticides.
Larvicides are used to kill larvae and pupae before they develop into biting adult mosquitoes. If it’s too late, adulticides are your go-to option. They can be in the form of coils, foggers, liquids, or aerosols.
Biological Control
There are three ways to do this. The first is to introduce fish like guppies or goldfish into water bodies to control mosquito larvae.
The second option is to use bacteria. Bti is a naturally occurring bacterium that produces toxins lethal to mosquitoes but safe for other wildlife.
Lastly, genetic control. Genetically modified mosquitoes that produce non-viable offspring are released to reduce populations over time. Read about Singapore’s attempt through the Wolbachia Project.
Mechanical Control
Same with prevention, mosquito control also covers eliminating standing water and using screens and nets to stop these insects from entering your house.
Mosquito traps are also used to attract and capture mosquitoes to reduce their numbers.
Dealing With Mosquito Bites (Treatment)
Worst case scenario, you have mosquito bites. Let’s discuss what you should do after getting bitten.
Immediate Relief
- Clean the bite with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection.
- Use an ice pack to reduce swelling and numb the area.
- Apply calamine lotion or an anti-itch cream to soothe the itch.
- You can also buy antihistamines over the counter.
When to See a Doctor
Don’t be complacent that it’s only itchiness and discomfort. If you experience the following symptoms, you should immediately see a doctor.
- If the bite area becomes very swollen, red or painful
- Signs of infection like pus, or red streaks
- Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face or throat, hives, etc.
- Systemic symptoms like fever, vomiting, or shortness of breath
Special Considerations for Businesses
If you are a business operating in Singapore, you have accountability for risk management. It’s your duty to conduct risk assessments, controlling, monitoring, and communicating these risks to all stakeholders.
It’s a must that you comply with the Workplace Safety and Health Act to guarantee your employee’s safety and health with minimal risks. Upon conducting and identifying that your property is at high risk of vector-borne diseases, you should implement plans to reduce this risk.
Consider all factors like outdoor dining, outdoor activities, etc. Protecting employees and customers should be one of your corporate priorities to take care of and retain them as your clients.
When You Should Call In Professionals
Different situations warrant the attention and expertise of pest professionals. That will depend on whether you want their intervention late or early on.
It is advisable to partner with a pest control service provider in Singapore in the following situations.
- If you have already tried DIY methods but still see a high number of mosquitoes
- If you or someone in your vicinity is at risk of vector-borne diseases and want to minimise health risks brought about by these deadly insects
- If you own a large property wherein you need more comprehensive and effective solutions
- If you notice potential breeding sites that are difficult to manage (e.g., clogged drains or large water bodies)
- If you have a business and need to comply with health and safety regulations regarding pest control
You Don’t Have to Face it Alone
Remember, mosquitoes are also considered pests, as they also cause discomfort and pose health risks to your family and the people around you. So don’t hesitate to let the professionals do their jobs and focus on what matters most.
Pest professionals employ effective and cost-effective mosquito control methods, giving you peace of mind that diseases like dengue and Zika fever are at bay.
